Design
This striking private residence replaces an old farmhouse atop the chalk downlands near Winchester. A sustainable approach guided the design throughout. The contemporary house sits confidently within a naturalistic planting scheme, where drought-tolerant gravel gardens flow seamlessly around the building and displaced site materials have been thoughtfully reused.
Shallow steps and pathways lead through rich, textured planting to a series of terraces used at different times of day. This careful fractioning of the space introduces a sense of intimacy to the expansive landscape.
Elements such as a corten steel retaining wall, oak steps, and a mix of grey and buff limestone paving create a compelling dialogue between the engineered and the natural. The predominantly native planting reinforces ecological resilience, anchoring the home within its surroundings.
