Equestrian Estate | Switzerland | 2019 - CURRENT

Wide hedgerows have been planted along the lanes, intended to remain untrimmed to encourage nature. These hedgerows have been packed full of blossoming and fruiting trees and shrubs, an extensive mix of evergreen and deciduous. A parkland of new trees now dots and clumps along the drive, framing views of the lake and forming part of an encircling, wind protecting green ring around the residence and stable yard. Phase one was planted in November 2019, the best planting window in Switzerland for bare rooted trees and shrubs, as Switzerland has a surprisingly short spring and can become warm and dry very quickly.

Place

Located in the East of Switzerland near St Gallen and Lake Constance. The land is gently undulating, open to the point of being exposed. This area is traditionally used for orchards. Winds now rake across the land. Many of the historical local names are derived from words describing bog, rain and wind.

brief

To enclose and protect the land from winds. Horses have flight instinct, being wary and easily spooked herd animals. The exposed situation and windy environment creates an unsettled feeling. Untrimmed nature hedges, clumps of new woodland and a park dotted with trees will enrich the biodiversity on the estate. The encircling new greenery will enhance the beautiful aspects, the view across the lake, the long driveway, seasonal colours and year round interest.

design

Encompassing the residence and stable yard with new woodland. A composition of trees to form a protective shield from the wind, help with land drainage and screen and frame certain views. The woodland will become more ornamental as its nears the residence whilst at the same time being nontoxic to horses. A more relaxed approach to maintenance will see the thick new nature hedges left to grow up and spread out. A less rigorous mowing regime in areas to encourage meadow land to form.
